Another cancellation of beds is about to take place in Slovak hospitals and also departments will be reduced, the daily Hospodárske noviny reports. Hospitals should miss out on about 3 000 beds. If the rationalization will take place, 6500 beds will disappear from the map within one year, as the insurance companies already realized one cancellation in July 2011 when the number of beds decreased by 3 300 and 156 departments were cancelled. According to the analyst from INEKO there still exists a space for cancellation of beds as the number of beds in Slovakia is above the average of OECD countries.

Reconstruction of the operating theaters in hospital in Komárno is completed. Operating theaters will be inaugurated on January the 24th this year. Nitra region as the owner of hospital invested € 452 000 in the reconstruction. The operator of hospital, non-profit organization PROLIFE, provided  € 200 000 for the internal equipment of the theaters. Hospital in Komárno serves for the attraction zone of 110 000 inhabitants.

According to daily Pravda from 20/01/2012 the healthcare professionals in indebted state hospitals earn on average € 250 more than healthcare professionals e.g. in non-profit organizations. According to the Vice President of the Association of Hospitals in Slovakia this discrimination in salaries, depending on where healthcare professionals work, is caused by large differences in payments for the same services for different institutions. Next reason of discrimination in salaries of doctors and nurses is the disunited methodology of calculating of salaries

Association of Municipalities in Vranov region raised € 12 200 in public collection for the hospital in Vranov. Proceeds from the collection will be used for the purchase of a new mammograph. Charitable fundraising for the mammograph, both from particular self-governments and from inhabitants of Vranov region, lasted from October to December 2011. Hospital is currently considering the kind of new device that will be purchased.

Žilina self-governing region, four regional hospitals and trade unionists are together complaining about the discrimination at the hospitals bail-out and lower salaries compared to state hospitals. On Thursday, they jointly filed the complaint addressed to the International Labour Organization (ILO). ILO's documents about discrimination and therapeutic and preventive care were also signed by Slovak republic.

National Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases in Bratislava opened new Centre for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Director of the Institute received the decision about the establishment of the Centre from the Ministry of Health at the end of the year. Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare chronic disease characterized by progressive increase of blood pressure in pulmonary artery. In regard to the uniqueness of the disease, its serious prognosis, complicated diagnostic procedures and specifics of the treatment is the diagnostic and therapeutic process focused in the specialized centres, such as the new one in Bratislava.

According to Slovak Television primetime news programme, smaller hospitals will need € 5 million in the first half of year to cover the increase of doctors' salaries. Hospitals, however, are allegedly already indebted and still do not know where to get these money. Health insurance companies did not change their contracts yet. Ministry of Health remains calm: it expects savings from pharmaceutical reform in amount of € 100 million annualy.

In the Eye clinic of L. Pasteur University Hospital in Košice new tomography ophthalmology device worth € 63 000 was put into operation. Hospital received it as a gift from the company Novartis through the Union of Blind and Partially Sighted of Slovakia. New device should accelerate the detection of eye diseases caused by damage of retina and optic nerve as well as the treatment of these diseases.

Association for Prevention of Hospital Infections devolved the Annual Prize for 2011 to the Hospital Zvolen. Hospital received the prize as an expression of the valuation of attained progress and effective efforts in the improving of situation. Hospital Zvolen allegedly attained first of all the improvement in the level of sanitary-epidemiological system, experienced the decrease of appearance of resistant strains on the departments and decrease of the consumption of antibiotics. It also reached the decrease of likelihood of patient colonization by microbes.

According to daily Pravda from 21/12/2011 small hospitals will probably next year resort themselves to unpopular measures and terminate their contracts with the health insurance companies. Patients are thereby threatened with the fact that they will pay for the treatment by themselves. Hospitals were given into a difficult situation by the doctors' salary increase, which they can not afford. They asked for € 50 million from Ministry of Finance, but Minister of Finance does not want to give it to them yet. Even Minister of Health, who did not negotiate with Minister of Finance yet, does not want to help them. According to Association of Hospitals in Slovakia the only defensive mechanism of hospitals is the terminating of contracts with the health insurance companies.
