University hospital in Martin opened a new surgical pavilion. Its construction took two years and required an investment of approximately €15 million. The project was co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme Health. The participation of hospital was 5%. Pavilion has 92 new beds. According to Minister of Health Ivan Uhliarik the new pavilion meets the latest stringent conditions of 21st century.

At the beginning of the year Children Faculty Hospital in Košice should have signed a contract for the reconstruction of its facilities worth € 11.8 million. However, public procurement, already declared, had to be cancelled. Public Procurement Office ordered the control of administrative procedure of the competition based on anonymous submission. Hospital is currently planning to re-start the public procurement procedure for the realization of the project.

Association of the Hospitals in Slovakia, which associates small non-state hospitals, is once again highlighting the lack of resources for higher wages of doctors and nurses. After yesterday’s negotiation with private health insurance companies Dôvera and Union, the Association informed that the slight increasing of funds, which have been offered by both insurance companies to the regional hospitals, will not be enough. Association therefore wants the Government to release € 50 million from the state treasury for the Ministry of Health.

J. A. Reiman Faculty Hospital in Prešov introduced these days, as the first healthcare institution in Slovakia, wearing of identification bracelets for all patients. This innovation should facilitate the work of healthcare staff and reduce the risk of misidentification of hospitalized persons, which may result in an incorrect given treatment. Bracelets are colour coded according to severity of diagnosis of their bearers. New is also the verification form, which is being signed before the surgery.

L. Pasteur University Hospital in Košice will have a new pavilion, which will include the urgent reception, surgical reception, operating rooms, laboratories and the runway for helicopter. According to the spokeswoman of the hospital the construction of modern facilities will be financed from the non-repayable contribution in total amount of € 26.5 million within the frame of Operational Programme Health. The end of construction works is scheduled for February 2014.

L. Pasteur University Hospital in Košice, with the aim to improve the provision of intensive care, purchased 25 new docking stations with an infusion pumps and linear batchers. New generation of the pumps of type B. Braun SPACE represents an entirely new concept in infusion therapy because of the location of particular pumps and batchers in the common base, so called docking station. Stations will facilitate the patient care due to space-saving and mobile usage.

Association of the Slovak Hospitals and Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa (VšZP, General Health Insurance Company) finally made an agreement. This is a result of a meeting of small healthcare institutions and the largest insurance company on the market. Association will allegedly recommend its members to sign the amendments to the contracts. Insurance company confirmed that they have agreed to increase the payments from the February 1st 2012. According to its spokeswoman this arrangement is, however, the subject to streamlining of the costs in particular hospitals, which will, however, not affect the availability of the health care.

Hospitals in Levice and Topoľčany are showing a loss even despite the maximum efforts to save. Both hospitals are managed by the non-profit organization Hospitals with clinics, which was set up by Nitra region. According to the president of the organization there is nowhere to save in the hospitals, but, nevertheless, their common loss is about € 1 million. According to her, the reason of increased cost, inter alia, is the introduction of liability for enlistment for inactive work readiness in both hospitals, but also an increasing of VAT and the minimum wage.

Hospitals should prescribe patients less pharmaceuticals, medical devices and laboratory tests. Otherwise they will not get money for higher salaries of doctors and nurses from Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa (General Health Insurance Company). If they reduce their monthly costs by approximately € 4 million, insurance company will from February give them around € 2 million monthly more. According to head of insurance company the reduction of the consumption of pharmaceuticals will not affect the patients and he also claims that hospitals are currently buying and using the pharmaceuticals very ineffectively.

As in the past, also in third quarter of last year healthcare professionals working in state hospitals earned the most. Among them doctors the best paid doctors were in joint-stock companies, where they earned € 1 642 per month. In public hospitals operating under the Ministry of Health doctors earned € 1 642 per month and the least earned doctors in non-profit organizations, where it was € 1 390.
