Hospitals last year paid almost € 180 000 to Healthcare Surveillance Authority for mistakes in treating of patients. This year it could be even more, as the Authority in the first half of this year imposed or proposed other authorities to impose hospitals the penalties in amount of more than € 100 000. Patients may demand for significantly higher amounts, if they sue hospital for mistake by the treatment on the court.

Faculty hospital and policlinic in Žilina wants from November 1, 2012 to introduce the uneven distribution of working hours and merge 8 departments into 4. This organizational change should eliminate the overtimes, streamline the management and operations. According to the director of the hospital, Štefan Volák, the previous results of managing are negative. Hospital though gives 90% of incomes from health insurance companies to the wages of employees.

Hospital in Poprad opened ten new operating rooms. Reconstruction and technological modernization was worth more than € 16 million, while the most of it was covered by resources from EU funds. Management of the hospital expects that change will bring the improving of the quality of services and shortening of waiting times. EU in the frame of Operational program Health contributed to rebuilding with € 13.95 million.

Private hospital in Lučenec is planning the mass reducing of staff. By the end of this year 50 nurses should lose their jobs. Reducing of staff was already reported also to the local Labour Office, although directly in the hospital the management allegedly does not talk about the reducing at all. Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family in Lučenec confirmed, that hospital announced the plan to dismiss 45 nurses and 5 midwives.

Ministry of Health will control the purchases and sales of properties of all organizations in its scope. Joint-stock companies, contributory organizations as well as non-profit organizations in the scope of Ministry will thus have to inform Ministry about the public procurements. Ministry will approve them, except of those with low value. According to the order of Minister Zuzana Zvolenská, all the departmental organizations have to submit to Ministry for approval their plans of investments and sale of the property for the next year, even by the end of the month.

Roosevelt faculty hospital and polyclinic in Banská Bystrica has started in the frame of the restructuring project to reduce its staff. Currently hospital agreed on termination of contract with 42 of more than 2 100 employees. Dismissals include 11 nurses. The rest of them are technicians and other healthcare professionals. None of the doctors was dismissed yet. In the frame of restructuring project based on the results of audits also the budget restriction in consumption and purchasing was implemented.

New director of University hospital in Bratislava, Miroslav Bdžoch, refuses to disclose the actual amount of the debt of largest hospital. He also does not want to specify, what measures are being prepared for the improving of its financial condition. University hospital in Bratislava has been long-termly the most indebted hospital and each of its bosses failed to change this situation. The actual amount of the debt is, however, for the first time a subject to secrecy.

Medics from Medical Faculty of Pavel Jozef Šafárik University will be able to educate themselves also in Košice-Šaca Hospital. Private institution from the Unipharma group of healthcare institutions has offered its facilities and experts to the Medical Faculty. Practice will take place in new clinics built by the hospital in cooperation with the school. Internal clinic, surgery and gynaecological and obstetric clinic will be available for the future doctors.

Current crisis situation in the university hospitals threatens the functioning of whole healthcare system. This was noted by the scientific council of Slovak Medical Chamber in its statement. According to the council, the malfunction of curative and preventive care, education and research as the unit process threaten the providing of health care. Scientific council plans in cooperation with the management of medical faculties and university hospitals to elaborate the proposal of the Statute of University Hospital as a binding legislative act.

Anti-corruption measures in healthcare system proposed by Medical Trade Union are non-conceptual and contrary to several acts. This is claimed by the Association of Hospitals in Slovakia. Proposal, according to the Association, gives on one side a great power to supervisory boards which do not have any responsibility for the operation of hospital and on the other side reduces the competency of the director by managing and increases his/her criminal liability.
